Masterbatches and its Applications

Masterbatches and its Applications

Masterbatches are substances that are amplified to a thermoplastic polymer to give polymer a color or to impart other properties to plastics like molding etc.

Master batches enable the processor to color a raw polymer according to the needs and demands.

The three types of master batches are:

  1. Solid or pallets
  2. Liquid
  3. Powder

There are certain predefined ways in which different masterbatches are made, for example pellets are made by mixing a polymer with pigment and additives while blundering all these ingredients in just a powder form would lead to the formation of powder masterbatches.

Master batches are used widely in plastic industries and have various applications. One important factor in masterbatches is its let down ratio. The ratio of additive carriers may vary from 1-5% or less or more than that depending on the plastic and its application. The let down ratio also depends on economics, size of the machine, dispersion requirements, and some other factors.

How are master batches made?

There are various machines used in its manufacturing, a few of them are listed here:

  1. Intensively dry mixing
  2. Internal intensive batch mixers
  3. Single screw compounding
  4. Twin screw compounding
  5. Continuous mixers

The twin screws are versatile.

Other steps/sections involved in its manufacturing involve:

  1. Feeding system
  2. Processing section
  3. Pelletizing section
  4. Discharge section

Some new age products:

  1. Nano material master batches
  2. Biodegradable masterbatches
  3. VCI masterbatches
  4. UV stabilizers
  5. Special effects
  6. Double colors
  7. Anti microbial

Types of plastics used in manufacturing different products:

  1. PETE
  2. HDPE
  3. PVC
  4. LDPE
  5. PP
  6. PS

Different plastics are used in different product manufacturing for example EEPP1001 has a versatile role in pp bottle industries for various reasons like:

  • It Reduces The Cost
  • Good Results In The End Product
  • Smooth Surface
  • Strength
  • Color Dispersion
  • Adhesives
  • Improves The Printing Ability

Its applications:

  • Packaging application
  • Automotive application
  • Building and construction applications
  • Water constructions and storage application
  • Plasticulture application
  • Household and consumer durable applications
  • Injection modeling to make household
  • Plastics bottle industries
